McMaster's nuclear reactor has been issued a Class IA Non-Power Reactor License by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC).

The license was issued following recent public hearings, where consideration was given to written material and presentations from McMaster and CNSC staff. The commission concluded that McMaster is qualified to operate this facility and will make adequate provisions for the protection of the environment, health and safety of persons and the maintenance of national security and measures required to implement Canada's international obligations.

The license is valid until June 30, 2007.

The McMaster Nuclear Reactor is a light-water moderated pool-type reactor that is used in a variety of engineering and medical physics research projects.

A record of proceedings, including reasons for decision and transcripts of the hearing are available on the CNSC Web site .
