This Thursday (July 14), the section of Forsyth Avenue on the south side of McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) parking garage will be closed to permit the final stage of work to be done for the Main Street entrance project. The road closure will remain in effect for approximately five weeks (est. August 18).

Access information and detour route info and diagrams are available at: http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mainstreet/MUMCentrancemap.pdf

During the road closure, the new Main Street West entrance to McMaster at Emerson will be open and will serve as the only access route to the hospital's main entrance and Emergency Department.

The new intersection at Main and Emerson will include pedestrian crossings and permit left and right hand turns for traffic exiting from the hospital and university.

The current access to Forsyth Avenue from Main Street opposite Bowman Street will be closed permanently although traffic lights and a pedestrian crossing will remain at this location.

Access to MUMC and the hospital parking garage between July 14 and approximately August 18 is as follows:

MUMC emergency entrance can only be accessed from Main Street West via the main driveway.

Patient drop-off and pick-up will remain at the hospital's main entrance.

Visitors and patients driving to the hospital for scheduled appointments must enter and exit the underground parking garage at the King Street West entrance at Forsyth Avenue.

Employees who park in the south garage must enter from Main Street West. They will proceed up the main hospital driveway and enter the south garage through the short-term parking lot. They may exit the same way, or go through the underground parking garage to King Street. Transponders will be required.

Detour Routes to the hospital and the university:

Traffic travelling eastbound on Main may turn left on Haddon Avenue to King Street to the hospital or Sterling Street to the University.

Traffic travelling westbound on Main may turn right on Longwood Road or Haddon Avenue to King Street to the hospital, or Sterling Street to the University.

All drivers are requested to remain on the designated detour routes.

HSR service:

The current detour routes and temporary bus stops will remain in place until further notice. Specific route information and maps are available by calling the ACT Office, ext. 24772; HSR, 905-527-4441; or the project website: http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mainstreet/

Where possible the use of public transit and carpooling is encouraged to reduce traffic congestion.

Sincere thanks to everyone for your patience and co-operation during this final phase of work on the Main Street entrance project. By the end of August the new entrance will be fully open and will provide improved safety and access to the University and hospital.
