‘Not going to class is like renting a hotel and sleeping on the street’: Sage advice for students, via Facebook

Skipping is best reserved for the gym, according to the senior students and alumni who posted advice to first years on McMaster's Facebook page. Many of the comments advised incoming students of the importance of attending lectures.

The first day on the job, the first date, the first day of high school: we all wish we could go back and redo a few life moments, armed with the experience gained through the passing of time.

Sadly, McMaster’s physicists have yet to perfect time travel, so we gave senior students and alumni the next best thing: the chance to impart some of their wisdom upon the class of 2017.

We asked the McMaster community, through the University’s official Facebook page, “What do you wish you had a known when you were a first year student?” And the answers came flooding in.

From posting the best places to study on campus to tips about using the city’s bus system, the McMaster community jumped at the chance to help incoming students.

The type of advice ranges, from Ali Rilstone’s nod to the value of owning a pair of shower shoes, to Becca Lynn’s demand that students “Get involved! The next four years will only be as great as you make them and they’ll fly by too fast!”

The most-liked comment so far? “Not going to class is like renting a hotel room and sleeping on the street,” posted by Prashant Patel, who’s sentiments about skipping classes are echoed by a number of commenters.
