Next steps in Teaching and Learning review

Teaching and Learning Review

In April 2018 the Provost shared terms of reference for a review of Teaching and Learning at McMaster. The review continues with a round of meetings scheduled with the external review committee this week.

The purpose is to review and evaluate supports for teaching and learning, with an emphasis on organizational structure, governance, and the delivery of effective services and programs.

Earlier in the review faculty, deans, and associate deans were surveyed about teaching and learning programs. The survey was overseen by Lori Goff, interim director MacPherson Institute, and Andrea Thyret-Kidd, project manager for the Office of the Provost.

The findings document teaching and learning activities on campus with a focus on the Paul R. MacPherson Institute for Leadership, Innovation and Excellence in Teaching. This service supports McMaster University instructors, students, and staff in improving and enriching teaching and learning.

External reviewers will be on campus September 25-27 to meet with stakeholders related to teaching and learning. These reviewers will make recommendations to enhance teaching and learning.

Reviewers include Simon Bates, Associate Provost Teaching and Learning at the University of British Columbia, Lynn Taylor, former Vice Provost University of Calgary, and Jean Wilson, director of Arts and Science program at McMaster University.

“Earlier this year McMaster won the prestigious Global Teaching Excellence Award based on the strength of our experiential learning opportunities,” says Provost David Farrar. “This review is a process to build on our efforts to provide  opportunities and experiences for our students.”

Along with pioneering problem-based learning, McMaster was also one of the first universities in Canada to create a centre specifically dedicated to the practice of teaching and learning on campus.

“We’re looking forward to the recommendations to follow the review process.”
