The Institute on Globalization and the Human Condition (IGHC) will begin a new
phase of activity with this fall with the arrival of the first class of the MA
in Globalization Studies
. This new interdisciplinary masters program is the
first graduate degree offered in Canada focusing on the study of globalization.

Robert O'Brien,
the IGHC's Associate Director and Graduate Student Advisor, commented
that the new MA had attracted outstanding students and was a path breaking initiative.
This MA puts us at the front of universities seeking to come to grips
with the complex developments surrounding Globalization.

Bringing together social science and humanities perspectives on globalization,
the MA in Globalization Studies prepares students for work in areas related
to globalization and as well as for further graduate work at the doctoral level
in a wide range of fields in which globalization has become a central area of
study and investigation. The IGHC has admitted seven full-time students for
the 2004-05 academic year.

On Sept. 7, 2004 members of the IGHC held a reception to celebrate their new
program and to recognize the other achievements of the Institute since its founding
in 1998. The reception was also an opportunity for the institute's newest
members to meet with current members.

In celebration of the new MA program in Globalization Studies and of research
and teaching in globalization on campus, the IGHC is planning a Global Arts
Week Sept. 20-24, 2004. Global Arts Week will feature music, plays and lectures
that deal with globalization and the challenges and opportunities it presents.
