New deans, superbugs and a slick new lab

McMaster is known for making a positive impact on the local, national and international stages. Each week, The Office of Public Relations highlights a few of the many McMaster stories making the news.

Research:

The Hamilton Spectator  CBC Hamilton and CHCH-TV covered the opening of the McMaster Biointerfaces Institute. The Spec’s online coverage included a video on the opening.

CBC’s The National carried a story about the dynamics of antibiotic resistance research, including an interview in the lab with Gerry Wright (Infectious Diseases Institute). CBC Hamilton posted a story on the same subject.

Agence France-Presse distributed a long feature focusing on the research of Hendrik Poinar (Anthropology) specifically on the concept of “de-extinction”. Among the media outlets to pick it up was the Japan Times. Ireland’s Newstalk radio also interviewed Poinar on his Black Death research.

New York Times fitness blogger Gretchen Reynolds interviewed Martin Gibala (Kinesiology) about his research into oxygen uptake.

The Toronto Star covered the Ontario finals of the 3 Minute Thesis contest for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows, with praise for a dramatic presentation by McMaster competitor Curtis McEwan. CBC Hamilton is posting the presentations by nine first-round finalists in the competition held recently at McMaster. The first three videos are here , here and here.

The Toronto Star published an op-ed piece that followed up on a study by Wayne Lewchuk (Labour Studies) and others into the growing problem of precarious employment.

The Los Angeles Times, CBC.ca, Global News, The Hamilton Spectator CHCH TV and others reported on research led by Koon Teo (Cardiology) showing that most survivors of heart attacks and strokes do not take steps to improve their lifestyles.

CBC.ca posted a story about research led by Sonia Anand (Cardiology) showing that genetic testing is not helpful in predicting who is susceptible to Type 2 diabetes.

Teaching, learning and student success:

900 CHML-AM and The Hamilton Spectator reported on McMaster appointing Ishwar Puri and Robert Baker as deans of Engineering and Science, respectively.

The Hamilton Spectator carried a story and photo on the exhibition by students graduating from the Studio Art program of McMaster’s School of the Arts.

The National Post sought the opinion of Huzaifa Saeed, McMaster Students Union VP Education, on research into predicting students’ grades.

Expert opinion: 

CTV News Channel interviewed Alex Sevigny (Communications) about instant communications vis-a-vis the Boston and Texas tragedies.

CHCH-TV interviewed John Colarusso (Anthropology, Linguistics) on the Chechen origins of two men believed to have bombed the Boston Marathon.

CTV News Channel interviewed Ira Price (Emergency Medicine) on the response to the Boston Marathon bombing.

Business News Network interviewed Terry Flynn (Communication Studies and Multimedia) on RBC outsourcing.

CBC.ca quoted Sarah McDonald (Obstetrics and Gynecology) in a piece on links between pregnancy, hypertension and diabetes.

Feature Story:

The Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, Hamilton Spectator, CHCH TV and others carried stories about Marauders’ quarterback Kyle Quinlan being nominated as CIS male athlete of the year.
