This week, Senate and the Board of Governors Executive approved the appointment of Peter Smith to the position.
He succeeds Fred A. Hall, who last year agreed to serve a one-year extension to his second term while a search for his replacement was completed, and is now retiring.

Smith arrived on campus as a student in 1978 from Brazil. He was in the first class receiving the B.Eng. Mgt. degree in Computer Engineering and Management. He completed his M.Eng. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering prior to joining McMaster's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1987.

He is one of the world's leading experts in radio frequency and microwave circuits, a subject on which he has co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications.

He is a recipient of the R.A. Ross Medal from the Engineering Institute of Canada, has led the Microwave Acoustics Library at McMaster and is a member of the IEEE and Association of Professional Engineers of Ontario. In 2002, he was named Associate Dean (Academic) of Engineering. In 2007, he was appointed Acting Dean.

“Dr. Smith is an outstanding leader, researcher and educator. I'm very pleased McMaster will continue to be the beneficiary of his expertise and experience as he serves in his new role,” says Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Provost and Vice-President Academic.

“I am very grateful to Fred A. Hall, for his exemplary service to McMaster. His wisdom, sound judgment and exceptional leadership set high standards as we move forward.”

Smith's term as Associate Vice-President (Academic) begins July 1.
