New acting dean of humanities

Ken Cruikshank

Associate professor of history Ken Cruikshank will begin his role as acting dean of the Faculty of Humanities Monday. Cruikshank will take over for Suzanne Crosta, who has served as dean since 2007.

The Faculty of Humanities will have new leadership as of Monday. Ken Cruikshank has agreed to take on the role of acting dean.

“Ken has been an important leader within the Faculty and across the university for many years,” said provost David Wilkinson. “As chair of history he has consistently demonstrated his commitment to innovative teaching and research. He has also taken on multiple committee roles and led initiatives that have strengthened the Faculty and McMaster.”

Cruikshank joined McMaster in 1993 after three years as an assistant professor at Trent University. He earned his PhD and MA from York University and his undergraduate degree from Carleton. He was named chair of McMaster’s history department in 2006.  He has been a member of the University Budget Committee, Co-Chaired the Refining Directions Implementation Plan Committee, served on Senate and the Board of Governors, and as president of the McMaster University Faculty Association.

“I have always been impressed by the way that humanities faculty, staff and students constantly apply the scholarly standards of civil, collegial, and critical reflection to their own research and learning practices”, observed Cruikshank. “It is an honour to be asked to work with them and other members of the McMaster community in continuing to build a creative and dynamic Faculty.”

He replaces Suzanne Crosta who recently announced her decision to step down as dean after serving in the role since 2007.
