John Gilbert Interprofessional Education Mentorship Award from the National Health
Sciences Students' Association.

The honour recognizes a mentor in interprofessional education for the 2011-2012 year
and acknowledges their encouragement, support, insight and enthusiasm that has been
instrumental to students and their work.

Interprofessional education refers to the practice of multiple students from varying
areas of health care learning together during their professional training.

Nominations for the award were open to health care providers, academics, advocates
and administrators.

Salfi was presented with the award at the association's annual national interprofessional
healthcare conference.

“It's a national award and very prominent figures have received this award before me –
they are my interprofessional education mentors,” said Salfi. “I know I've made a
difference in the Faculty of Health Sciences, especially in the School of Nursing, but to
have students from across Canada vote for me was a huge honour.”

Salfi joined the School of Nursing in 1999 and is involved in both the undergraduate and
graduate programs. She completed her bachelor of science in nursing in 1997, her
master of science in 2001 and her PhD in 2004 at McMaster University.

“Dr. Jenn Salfi is a champion of interprofessional education at McMaster University and
an encouraging mentor of student leaders,” said Joshua Smalley, the McMaster medical
student who nominated her. “She oversees numerous projects that break down silos and
helps cultivate a generation of collaboration-ready health professionals.”
