McMaster University's first interdisciplinary program has gotten more than just a name change.
At a ceremony held yesterday at Alumni Memorial Hall the labour studies program became the School of Labour Studies, marking a new stage in the evolution and growth of labour studies at McMaster.
Current students, faculty, alumni and community members gathered for the inauguration of the school, at which University President Peter George spoke of labour studies' approach to learning.
"I've said many times before that McMaster is a university that prides itself on its approach to learning, and the School of Labour Studies encompasses all that we believe," he said. "It is deeply rooted in the community, working with research collaborators and the labour movement. It is innovative and interdisciplinary."
The labour studies program at McMaster was the first of its kind at a Canadian university.
