Mini-Med School takes community into medical school

Check out the world of medicine by becoming a McMaster med student for seven weeks.

The weekly sessions of the McMaster Mini-Med School will feature two speakers on a common theme, exploring the scientific basis of important medical issues, followed by a question and answer session.

The Wednesday classes begin March 2.

The subjects going under the microscope include forensic medicine, travel medicine, chronic pain and psychotic disorders. Professors of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine will go into depth on their topics, without assuming prior medical knowledge.

This is the third year for the program organized by the medical students of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, who recruit some of their favourite professors as speakers.

“The student committee has worked very hard to put together an exciting agenda,” said medical student Alicia Gallaccio, one of the program organizers.

“The proceeds will benefit medical students through scholarships and funding for graduation. Plus, this year we will be allocating a large percentage of our profits to charitable organizations. Each evening we will present a check to the speakers, to be given to a charitable organization that reflects the topic presented that evening.”

Classes will run 7 to 9:10 p.m., in the McMaster University Health Sciences Centre.
