McMaster graduate and Canadian businessman Michael Lee-Chin has been honoured for his philanthropic commitments, including his $5-million donation to the Michael G. DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Toronto Chapter.

With a background that embraces three different cultures, Lee-Chin, chairman and chief executive officer of AIC Limited, has a distinct perspective on life, one that is shared by many newcomers to Canada. Although he graduated from McMaster with an engineering degree, Lee-Chin soon discovered he possessed an inherent business savvy. A classic success story, Lee-Chin has gone from enterprising student to one of Canada's wealthiest men.

Lee-Chin is known for his generous philanthropy, to not only McMaster but also numerous other health and educational institutions in Canada and abroad. His donations have been instrumental in creating invaluable cultural and educational legacies.

Lee-Chins gift of $5 million to McMaster announced in June 2001 helped to create the state-of-the-art AIC Institute for Strategic Business Studies in the DeGroote School of Business. The AIC gift also helped support the creation of a chair in Investment and Portfolio Management, an MBA program with specific focus on strategic business studies and a certificate program on business valuation in continuing education for industry professionals. Two professorships were also created and a $500,000 endowment provides scholarships to help recruit top talent into this competitive program.

AFP also recognized Lee-Chin for his $30-million gift to the Royal Ontario Museum and $10-million commitment to the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

Celebrating groups and individuals who turn their passion into action is the focus for the Philanthropy Awards presented each year by the AFP. Along with Lee-Chin this year the award recipients include Isadore and Rosalie Sharp, Anthony Fell, the 2004 Grade Five Class of Havergal Junior School, TD Bank Financial Group and the Grocery Foundation. The AFP Greater Toronto Chapter has been honouring leadership in philanthropy through its annual awards program since 1995. The Awards will be presented at the annual National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon to be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, North Building on Tuesday, Nov. 15.
