Meet this afternoon’s Science valedictorian

If you could have any superpower what would it be? What is your definition of success? Meet Nagashree Thovinakere, the valedictorian at the June 13 afternoon convocation for the Faculty of Science.

1. Name:
Nagashree Thovinakere

2. Hometown:
Brampton, ON

3. What is the degree and subject you pursued?
Honours BSc. Life Sciences, Sensory Motor Systems Specialization.

4. What made you choose McMaster for your higher education career?
I was really intrigued by the interdisciplinary aspect of the Life Sciences program, particularly because the program encourages us to look at a problem from multiple perspectives, and this holistic approach is what drew me towards Mac. But what made it absolutely certain was the passionate, caring and loving people I had the pleasure of meeting when I came to visit. I just fell in love with the people, the community, and the campus. Oh, and I have always had a thing for waterfalls!

5. What will you be doing/see yourself doing after graduation?
I am excited to start my next journey as a science communicator and writer, while also continuing to pursue medical school during the year!

6. What would you say to your first-year self?
Get involved and do things that excite you the most, not the things that you feel like you have to do. McMaster is filled with tremendous opportunities that will help you grow both personally and academically. And while university can be quite overwhelming, these experiences will help you find a balance between school and life, and the memories and the relationships you will form in the process will be worth it!

7. Do you have any advice for current and future students?
It is okay for your interests and passions to change, including your career goals. Keep checking in with yourself and follow your interests. Remember that we are grateful to have been given this opportunity to learn, grow and challenge ourselves to become the best versions of ourselves. Reflect on your experiences and it will help you discover your voice. Life is not a linear path, there isn’t just one way to get to your destination!

8. How has McMaster shaped the person you are today?
McMaster has played a vital role in shaping the person I am today. Like most people, I have always felt like an outsider, often struggling to find ways to fit in. However, through my experiences at Mac, I have learned that in the process of fitting in, it is important to ensure that your voice is still heard, because your voice matters just as much as anyone else’s. I am grateful to my professors, mentors, and the communities that I have been able to be a part of for encouraging me to constantly push myself to find my voice, to become a resilient and innovative thinker.

9. What events did you enjoy the most at McMaster/Hamilton?
Welcome Week and the Ultimate Arts show will always hold a special place in my heart.

10. What is your definition of success?
I think success to me is accepting and being happy with your actual self just as much as you admire your ideal self.

11. How has McMaster helped you create a Brighter World?
My experiences at McMaster have helped me realize the impact an individual can have on the community. Through my involvement with research, rehabilitation programs and art therapy, I have been able to critically think and translate the knowledge I have gained in classrooms to better the lives of the people in the community. My roles as a tutor, arts director and peer mentor have shaped me into becoming the leader I am today, and I look forward to applying these skills to provide a platform to people to raise and celebrate their voices.

12. What motivates you to work hard?
I am motivated by finding something I truly believe in, by doing something out of love, not out of sheer necessity.

13. If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
I think pausing time would be cool! It would allow us to reflect and embrace each fleeting moment of life.

14. Who is your favourite professor?
Dr. Kimberley Dej has been a huge influence on me during my time at McMaster. She has constantly encouraged me to critically analyze and consider multiple perspectives about any issue. It is also through her guidance that I developed a passion for science communication and an interest in bridging the gap between arts and science.

15. What book are you currently reading?
The book thief by Markus Zusak

16. While at Mac, did you receive donor-funded financial assistance (e.g., a scholarship, award, bursary)? Any thoughts on the importance of giving back to your alma mater to support future generations?
I was fortunate enough to receive the entrance scholarship and general bursaries throughout the past four years. I can personally attest to the impact financial assistance has had on my education. I would not be here if it weren’t for this. It would truly be an honor to give back to the McMaster community to help continue supporting dreams for generations to come!
