India-Canada Society (ICS) of Hamilton, which draws a large part of its membership from the McMaster community, was awarded a 2005 YMCA Peace Medal this week for its work in promoting communal harmony, fighting racism, initiating the annual Gandhi Peace Festival and McMaster Peace Lecture.

“The India-Canada Society (ICS) organization has a long history and strong connections with McMaster University,” says Sourav Ray, assistant professor of marketing from McMaster's DeGroote School of Business, and general secretary of the ICS executive committee. “In any community we live during our lifetime, we all should strive to contribute to the social well-being in meaningful ways.”

Since 1993, ICS, with the McMaster Peace Centre, have co-sponsored and organized the Annual Gandhi Peace Festival, an event that draws nearly 500 participants. ICS also has helped raise funds to endow the University's Annual Gandhi Non-Violence Lectures. At the community level, ICS holds, as part of the peace festival, an annual 'writing for peace' contest for high school students and awards four annual prizes consisting of a certificate of recognition and a small cash award.

ICS was the winner in the Adult Group category.

McMaster's MBA's Without Borders was a runner-up for the Youth Award. Co-founded by McMaster MBA alumnus Tal Dehtiar and Michael Brown, this not-for-profit group helps struggling economies become self-sustaining through the development of private sector enterprise. In return, MBA students gain valuable international experience.

The YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington, together with YMCA associations across Canada, celebrated YMCA World Peace Week November 19-26, by encouraging kids, youth and adults to take the time to incorporate daily acts of peace into their lives to help build strong, engaged and peaceful communities.

The awards ceremony was the highlight of the week, featuring keynote speaker Dave Irvine-Halliday, founder of Light Up the World Foundation, which facilitates the use of safe, healthy, efficient and affordable Solid State Lighting systems, using renewable energy to light rural homes in the Developing World.
