The kayaker was named the 2004 winner of the Lou Marsh Award, beating out some of Canada's top athletes, including wheelchair racer Chantal Petitclerc, basketball player Steve Nash and gymnast Kyle Shewfelt.

The 22-year-old kinesiology student was a double medal winner at the Olympic Games in Athens this past August. He won gold in the K1, 500 metre kayak finals and bronze in the K1, 1000 metre kayak event. He took the 2003-04 academic year off of school to train for the Olympics and returned to his studies this fall.

The award, decided by a panel of sports editors and broadcasters, is named after former Toronto Star sports editor Lou Marsh, a star athlete as well as an NHL and boxing referee in his day.

Other award contenders were baseball players Jason Bay and Eric Gagne, cyclist Lori-Ann Muenzer and hockey player Martin St. Louis.

Last year, golfer Mike Weir edged Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Eric Gagne by one vote to win the award, which is given out annually.
