McMaster's newly-appointed Director, Human Rights & Equity Services is a noted human rights lawyer and expert with over 20 years experience promoting human rights, business ethics and diversity management in both the private and public sectors.

Mile Komlen assumes his new role on Sept. 15. As a human rights lawyer, Komlen is a leading advocate for diversity and inclusivity in the workplace with expertise in employment equity, anti-discrimination measures and human rights training. He currently serves as Senior Diversity Consultant at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Komlen earned his undergraduate degree at Carleton University. He was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2000, after earning his Bachelor of Laws at the University of Ottawa Law School. He anticipates completing his Master of Arts in Globalization Studies at McMaster next year.

His undergraduate research was devoted to multiculturalism and equality rights issues. In 1992, he was the first man in Canada to be awarded a degree in women's studies. His graduate work focuses on the obligations of transnational corporations in upholding human rights standards in jurisdictions where they do business.

“McMaster is fortunate to welcome a national leader in human rights and equity to the University,” says Ilene Busch-Vishniac, Provost and vice-president Academic. “We will benefit from Mile's experienced leadership and innovative vision in an area that is of exceptional importance to McMaster as it continues to build an inclusive community.”
