More than 3,000 elementary and high school students will descend on campus to partake in one of the many camps the University offers over the summer.
Some will experience what it is like to be a real university student, others will hit McMaster's courts, while others will learn about science, engineering and McMaster's popular inquiry-based learning method.
The following camps are taking place over July and August:
Mini-University – this two-week summer camp for children ages 9 – 14 and a Junior Leadership Program for 15-16 year olds, involves hands-on, self-directed science and non-science activities. Children will be given a topic and guidelines to direct the activity. The end result, and what they discover will be up to them. Instructors are directed to plan for 5-10 minutes of instruction and then let the children discover the rest for themselves. Swimming in our Olympic sized pool and outdoor recreation are included in the schedule of activities each day. As well your children will experience an over night stay in residence on the second Thursday of camp.
Sport Fitness School – this program, which has been offered for 27 years, always fills up fast. SFS is a multi-sport program that provides children ages 6-16 with opportunities in a wide range of sport and fitness related activities. The school is designed to influence lifestyle choices and increase the value of sport and fitness activities to children. Participants choose three sport activities from 24 offerings. Included in the day are two additional fitness activities.
Marauder Sport Summer Camps – Athletics and Recreation also offers Marauder Sport Summer Camps, including boys and girls basketball, football, strength & conditioning, soccer and volleyball.
Venture Engineering & Science, Computers & Technology Camp – Other students will be exploring the worlds of engineering, science and computers through the Faculty of Engineering's Venture and Adventure Camp. Venture provides an excellent opportunity for children to experience the worlds of engineering, science and computers through fun hands-on activities.
Junior Inquiry Camp – New this year is a Junior Inquiry Camp. The Junior Inquiry Camp is founded on an increasingly popular method of education called inquiry-based learning which maintains that learning and personal development are inseparable. Junior Inquiry Camp will help campers, ages 11-14, develop these skills in collaboration with peers, leadership, teamwork, and communication. Campers will develop a multitude of abilities through thematic projects, as well as team-building exercises, workshops, presentations from experts, and physical and artistic activities.
L.E.A.P. (Learning Enrichment Advancement Program) – This new summer engineering enrichment camp is available to Grade 11 and 12 students interested in science and engineering. The camp combines lectures, design projects and laboratory experiments and is held in Faculty of Engineering facilities.
