Janet Cook, two-time McMaster Female Athlete of the Year, will have an opportunity to swim for an Olympic medal this fall in Sydney, Australi.

Cook took almost a full second off her personal best time in the 100m freestyle event (57.09), placing sixth at the 2000 Maritime Life Olympic Trials in Montreal earlier this month. The sixth-place finish secures Janet a spot on the 2000 Canadian Olympic team as a member of the 4x100m freestyle relay squad.

An Olympic berth caps an outstanding year for the second-year social sciences student from Saskatoon. Janet won two gold and three silver medals at the 1999-2000 CIAU Swimming Championship.

Cook was undefeated during the regular season in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and broke three McMaster records and one OUA record. She also earned six gold medals at the OUA Championships. Cook was also named as the McMaster Swimmer of the Year, an OUA All-Star, CIAU All-Canadian, and the OUA's nominee for the CIAU Female Athlete of the Year award.

Cook will join former Marauder swimmer and Hamilton native Joanne Malar on the Canadian Olympic team. Malar will compete in the 200m and 400m individual medley events after finishing first in each event at the Olympic trials.
