Over 700 delegates from universities and cities across Canada participated in four days packed full of international development workshops and inspirational speakers.

Roy Steiner of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Jim Balsillie, the co-CEO of Research In Motion and Paul Polak, founder of International Development Enterprises, were some of the speakers who addressed delegates.

“It was interesting to witness the audience being passionate about international development, but also critical and analytical of any unsupported claim” said Sal Ajek, a fifth year civil engineering and society student. “The issues were debated in an open and objective atmosphere, and all the speakers had their fair share of tough, but insightful, questions.”

Even with a busy schedule, the CEOs and founders of EWB, George Roter and Parker Mitchel, found time to connect with delegates. From popping into workshops, to ambushing members for intriguing discussions, they played an active role throughout the entire conference.

The conference ended with a gala at the Metro Toronto Convention centre and a passionate speech by the CEOs of EWB, which left a long lasting impression on many delegates.

“I have never had so much information thrust towards me in such a short period of time. The conference demonstrated the complexity of development issues and how staggering they truly are,” said Glen Prevost, a fourth year engineering student.
