The goal is to collect 2,070 units of blood nationwide.
This year, students at 12 university, college and technical schools in 10 Canadian cities, including Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Sudbury, Guelph, Kingston, London, Oshawa, Hamilton and Ottawa will compete to find out which school can save the most lives by donating blood.
This year's challenge runs from Jan. 14th to Feb. 8. Each campus has set its own goal. McMaster's goal is to collect 240 units of blood. At the end of the challenge, the campus that comes closest to or most exceeds its goal will receive a trophy for their campus.
Most importantly, the challenge aims to establish the next generation of blood donors. Many students say they are willing to donate blood, but haven't had time or are afraid to try it for the first time. Currently, the largest percentage of blood donors in Canada is over the age of 50. As this group ages, there is a growing need for more young Canadians to give blood and ensure a safe and secure blood supply for everyone.
This is the second year McMaster is participating in the challenge. Blood donor clinics will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in CIBC Hall.
“Roving recruiters” will be on campus during the three-week challenge to generate excitement by making in-class announcements and setting up information booths across campus.
