McMaster seeks support for 2014 Commonwealth Games bid

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/web_commonwealth.jpg” caption=”Hamilton 2014 Commonwealth Games logo”]Hamilton, which once again has thrown its hat into the ring to host the Commonwealth Games, is looking for community support in its quest to bring the Games home in 2014.
The McMaster community is encouraged to show its support for the bid, by logging on to www.hamilton2014games.ca and registering your support.
“One of the things the bid review committee looks for is community support for the bid and we are trying to get as many people as possible to log their support for our bid on the website,” says Roger Trull, vice-president of university advancement at McMaster. “If you could take a minute and log on to www.hamilton2014games.ca and register your support for the bid it would be greatly appreciated.”
Hamilton is competing against Halifax, Ottawa and York Region to represent Canada in the international bid. The deadline for formal bids from Canadian cities is Nov. 1, 2005. On Nov. 15, an announcement of the short list is expected with the final decision and announcement on Dec. 15. A decision at the international level is scheduled for April 2007.
The Commonwealth Games, which was born in Hamilton in 1930 as the British Empire Games, includes 10 days of competition, more than 6,000 athletes and officials, 2,500 international media, 600 VIPs and a television audience of more than 1 billion worldwide.
McMaster will play a major role as a partner in the Games, including hosting the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village, sports competitions and medical support.
The 2014 Games will run July 17-27, 2014. In 2003, the City of Hamilton lost its campaign to host the 2010 Games to Delhi, India.
