McMaster researchers get a $2.7-million boost

Yesterday, the Ontario government announced funding awards through the Ontario Research Fund and the Early Researcher Award programs.
Beneficiaries under the Ontario Research Fund are Hatem Zurob (Materials Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering), Mehran Kasra (Mechanical Engineering , Faculty of Engineering), Mick Bhatia (Stem Cell & Cancer Research Institute, Faculty of Health Sciences); Deda Gillespie (Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour, Faculty of Science); Sigal Balshine (Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour, Faculty of Science); Joan Krepinsky (Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences); Qiyin Fang (Engineering Physics, Faculty of Engineering), Kathy McCoy (Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences); Steve Hranilovic (Electrical & Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering), Joanna Wilson (Biology, Faculty of Science)Thomas Maibaum (Computing & Software, Faculty of Engineering); Bradley Doble (Stem Cell & Cancer Research Institute, Faculty of Health Sciences).
Those who will receive funding under the Early Researcher Award are Paulin Coulibaly (Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and the School of Geography & Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science); P.J. Devereaux (Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences); David Emslie (Chemistry, Faculty of Science), Qiyin Fang (Engineering Physics, Faculty of Engineering); Yurij Mozharivskyi (Chemistry, Faculty of Science); Nikolas Provatas (Materials Science & Engineering, Faculty of Engineering); Stephen Veldhuis (Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering); James Wadsley (Physics & Astronomy, Faculty of Science); Peidong Wu (Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering).
Yesterday's announcement was made by Jim Watson, Minister of Health Promotion, on behalf of Premier Dalton McGuinty, who is also Minister of Research and Innovation.
“By enabling this kind of world-class research to be done right here in Ontario, we're giving leading researchers the resources to create better therapies, services and products that benefit Ontario families,” said McGuinty.
The money is part of a $36-million investment supporting 240 projects province-wide.
