McMaster recognizes top students

If a formula existed for earning top grades it would be: hard work + dedication + perseverance = A+. Of course, it's never that simple – but a group of McMaster students have accomplished just that – the challenging task of achieving those perfect marks.
These students were honoured at the President's Awards and Provost's Honour Roll Reception. The gathering brought together students from all levels and Faculties who achieved academic excellence in the 2007-2008 academic year, either in their final year of secondary school or at McMaster.
When asked for “words of wisdom” on achieving such high academic success many students heralded the importance of balance.
“It feels good to be recognized as a group for our hard work last year,” said Sara Imran, a third-year health sciences student. “However, I think our achievement has more to it than just marks. You need to have a balance between academics and extra-curricular activities to truly succeed.”

Bianca Tomsa, a third-year health sciences student, asserts that personal motivation is the best method for achieving your academic goals.
“You need to take courses that interest you and do things that you are passionate about. You can't depend on the professor or other students to motivate you, but instead must motivate yourself to be the best you can be.”
Both Imran and Tomsa are members of the Provost's Honour Roll, which honours outstanding students with a 12.0 sessional average on at least 30 units. 53 students were inducted to the honour roll this year.
Students who received the President's Awards were awarded entrance scholarships in September 2008 for achieving admission averages of 95 per cent or more in their final year of secondary school. 167 students received President's Awards.
