Research Infosource Inc. has released its 2010 list of Canada's top 50 research universities and McMaster University has again been named one of this country's best.

With a total sponsored research income of $377.7-million – up more than $4-million from last year – McMaster maintained its sixth position in the rankings. The University also maintained its second place rank in terms of research intensity, averaging $309,400 per faculty member, well above the national average of $167,200.

Research intensity is a measure of research income per full-time faculty member.

“McMaster is well-known for its strength in research and innovation,” said University President Patrick Deane. “Rankings like these are a reflection of the University's standing as one of the top post-secondary institutions in the world, as well as the reputation of our outstanding researchers.”

This year, Research Infosource included a “Decade in Review” in which McMaster has earned the designation as top performer in research income growth from 1999 to 2009 in the medical/doctoral category, as well as second-top performer in research intensity growth for the same period.
