McMaster President to lead Queen’s University

McMaster President Patrick Deane is taking on a new role at Queen’s University. It was announced on Nov. 5 that he will be Queen’s new Principal as of July 1, 2019.

“It will be extremely difficult to leave McMaster,” said Deane. “I was welcomed here 9 years ago and from that first day to this, I have been amazed at the ground breaking work of our researchers, the commitment of our students to making a difference, and the dedication of the staff, alumni and friends of the University to expanding McMaster’s impact on our community and our world.”

Deane is approaching the final year of his second, five-year term as president.

“On behalf of the entire McMaster community I want to thank Patrick for his stellar and dedicated service to the University,” said Paul Douglas, Chair of the Board of Governors. “During his leadership, McMaster has significantly enhanced its reputation and standing both nationally and internationally. But while it has grown and expanded its influence, Patrick has made sure that the University has maintained the special qualities that have made McMaster a home to innovation and imagination.”

Deane will continue as president until June 30, 2019 when current provost David Farrar will assume the role of acting president for a term of up to one year. The acting appointment has been approved by the Board.

Douglas said, “We are fortunate to have someone of David’s experience and calibre willing to take on the role of acting president. Not only will the University have continuity in strong leadership, it will allow the full process for a new university president to unfold in the normal manner, including consultation and opportunities for involvement from across McMaster.”

The committee to recommend a new president is determined by the Senate and the Board. It is expected to be in place and ready to begin its work early in the new year.
