McMaster mourns workers killed on the job

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/dayofmourning.jpg”]McMaster honoured workers who have been killed or injured on the job at a ceremony today to mark the National Day of Mourning.
Hosted by MUSA CLC Local 2003-1, in conjunction with McMaster's unions, the ceremony took place under the University flagpoles, in front of the Burke Science Building.
Pictured in the accompanying photo, Karen Belaire, vice-president administration, provided remarks to a group gathered at the ceremony. Her talk was followed by speakers from campus and local labour unions.
Twenty years ago, the Canadian Labour Congress declared April 28 a National Day of Mourning for workers injured or killed on the job. Every year since, unions, labour councils, families and community partners gather by the thousands to “mourn for the dead.” What began through the efforts of Canada's labour movement is now observed in more than 100 countries.
More information about the National Day of Mourning is available through Workers Health and Safety Centre Day of Mourning flyers that have been distributed to all departments on campus, or online at www.whsc.on.ca.
