McMaster Marauder sports update Sept. 4-10: Football, baseball teams get strong starts
In the opening week of varsity action the football and baseball teams picked up right were they left off last season. In front of a near- capacity crowd at University Stadium in Waterloo the football team over came a five-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat Waterloo in the dying moments of their opening game. The baseball team continued to roll defeating Western in both games of the season opening doubleheader.

BASEBALL
7beat Durham College 6-0 in the Canadian Intercollegiate Baseball Association First Pitch Classic at SkyDome. Matt Fortuna led the offensive attack with 3 hits and 2 runs batted in. Brett Gibson, Josh Krywionek, Clayton Mohamed, and Scott Hughes combined to hold Durham to just one hit.
7swept their season opening doubleheader at Western, 8-4 and 13-0. Matt Fortuna led the offence with 4 hits, 6 runs batted in, a stolen base, and a home run. Josh Krywionek gave up only one hit over five innings.
WOMEN'S FIELD HOCKEY
7in their first game of the season MAC defeated Queen's 1-0 at the University of Toronto Invitational tournament. Alicia Seroski scored the game-winning goal.
7MAC lost three tough games to finish the tournament. Game scores were 6-0 vs. Guelph, 5-0 vs. Carleton and 3-0 vs. St. Mary's.
FOOTBALL
7won a hard-fought game with Waterloo 41-33. Kojo Aidoo led the Marauder offence with 250 yards rushing on 25 carries. Aidoo also scored 2 touchdowns. His second, coming with 1:53 remaining in the game, sealed the victory. Ray Mariuz led the defense with 7 tackles. Mike Shannon and Dave Kuzamanovich had an interception apiece.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
7lost to Guelph 1-0. Carla Filice had a strong showing in her first game with the Marauders.
7tied Brock 0-0. Erin Wilson had a solid game in net, shutting out the opposing offence.
MEN'S SOCCER
7beat Guelph 3-0. Jason Shannon, Carlos Llamas, and Afifi Ahmed each scored goals for MAC.
7despite controlling the pace for most of the game MAC lost to Brock 3-1. Alex Katsaros scored MAC's only goal.
