That's why the Department of Mathematics & Statistics is hosting its third annual Math@Mac Day to help high school students see the possibilities that lie beyond the numbers in their notebooks.

“Outreach events like Math@Mac Day are aimed at high school students from Grades 10 to 12, and reinforce the connection between the mathematics they study at school and some of the fascinating questions that link mathematics to a variety of fields,” said Alison Sills, associate dean of studies for the Faculty of Science. “A solid background in mathematics is, of course, essential to success within any of the pure and applied sciences, but regardless of where they are headed, we know that all students benefit from studying more mathematics in high school.”

Math@Mac Day runs from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6. Registration ends on Tuesday, March 4 and is limited to 200 students.

The day will feature presentations in CIBC Hall on Math in Film by associate professor Matheus Grasselli and the Mysteries of Numbers by associate professor Romyar Sharifi of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.

“McMaster is renowned for innovation in education [and] in particular, for its many inquiry-style courses,” said Caroline Burgess, outreach coordinator for the Department of Mathematics & Statistics. “Math@Mac Day provides high school students the opportunity to experience this approach to learning mathematics. Through presentations and interactive problem-solving sessions, we hope to intrigue and challenge students so that they are inspired to tackle more open-ended questions.”

There is no charge for this event. For more information, please contact Burgess at burgcar@mcmaster.ca.
