McMaster hosts Math Enrichment Day

Photo by Susan Bubak.”]McMaster's Bachelor of Health Science (B.H.Sc.) students have been volunteering at six elementary schools across Hamilton to teach enrichment math to pupils preparing for the Gauss Mathematics competition this spring. The after school sessions have been a tremendous success, with positive feedback from both the students and principals of the participating schools.

On Friday, April 13 elementary school students and their teachers will participate in the annual Math Enrichment Day at McMaster University hosted by the B.H.Sc. Outreach program. The event is designed to entertain as well as further prepare the students for the upcoming Gauss contest.

By providing the students in Grades 7 and 8 with stimulating and engaging presentations and activities, the sponsors of the event hope to encourage them to maintain their academic enthusiasm.

The activities of the day include:

pasta bridge-building contest (9 to 10 a.m.)

mock Gauss math contest (10:15 to 11:45 a.m.)

interactive scientific presentation by Ken Sills and Kari Dalnoki-Veress of the physics and astronomy department (12:30 to 1:30 p.m.)

judging of the pasta bridges (1:30 to 2 p.m.)

“The event is designed to provide students in the Hamilton community with an opportunity to visit the McMaster campus and recognize the hard work of the more than 30 volunteer tutors who have been committing part of their days to travel to these schools and spend time teaching the students,” said Margaret Secord, Faculty supervisor in the B.H.Sc. program.

“By the end of the Math Day, we hope that our tutors understand the impact they have had on these students, and in addition, we hope the day's events will motivate the elementary students to continue their hard work and pursuit of academic achievement.”
