McMaster helps launch legal philosophy partnership

McMaster is known around the world for a number of things: its transdisciplinary
approach to teaching and learning, its innovative research, its excellence in student
scholarship. Over the last number of years, the Faculty of Humanities has worked to
ensure that the University is also known for something else: its strengths in the study of
legal philosophy.

With one of the largest groups in the country dedicated to researching the field of
jurisprudence, McMaster has quietly become a hub for those interested in the nature of
law, legal systems and legal institutions, with a reputation known around the globe.

Wil Waluchow, Senator William McMaster Chair in Constitutional Studies and professor in
the Department of Philosophy, routinely supervises a dozen graduate students at a time
and says that the esteem with which McMaster is held in legal philosophy circles is
remarkable.

“We're in quite a unique position to have the number of people we do studying various
branches of this field,” he said. “We've been able to attract wonderful grad students and
that has really helped us to increase our profile around the world.”

The department has recently formalized its ties to Osgoode Hall Law School and York
University with an arrangement called the
