McMaster community members appointed to Order of Canada

Seven people with ties to McMaster have been recognized with appointments to the Order of Canada.

John (Jack) Pelech '55, an honorary doctorate recipient in 2001, and Douglas Barber, a professor-in-residence who taught part-time at the University for 27 years and an honorary doctorate recipient in 1998, were invested as members of the Order on Feb. 10.

Five of the 87 people appointed on Feb. 21 also have McMaster connections.

Dr. Eric Hoskins '82 and Dorothy Pringle '64 were appointed as officers of the Order.

Hoskins is president of War Child Canada, a humanitarian organization dedicated to helping children affected by war.

Pringle is dean emeritus/professor emeritus of the School of Nursing, University of Toronto.

Howard Engel '55 and Hanna Newcombe '45 were appointed as members.

Engel, author of the Benny Cooperman series of novels along with other works, was recognized for his contributions to arts and writing.

Newcombe, who also received an honorary doctorate from McMaster in 1982, was recognized for her voluntary service.

A peace researcher and activist for 40 years, she was director of the Peace Research Institute in Dundas until it closed in 2004.
