McMaster community invited to provide input in search for new associate vice-president/vice-provost, Equity and Inclusion

The position is a senior leadership role responsible for identifying and achieving institution-wide equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) priorities and goals, as well as leading McMaster’s Equity and Inclusion Office.


McMaster University acknowledges that the discovery, communication and preservation of knowledge must take place in an institution that recognizes the importance and power of diversity at all levels. With the goal of building an inclusive community with a shared purpose, McMaster is beginning the search for a new associate vice-president/vice-provost, Equity and Inclusion (AVPEI).

The position is a senior leadership role responsible for identifying and achieving institution-wide equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) priorities and goals, as well as leading McMaster’s Equity and Inclusion Office.

Both academic (faculty) applicants and senior administrators (staff) will be considered. If an academic candidate is selected, the position will be vice-provost, Equity and Inclusion. If a senior administrator is selected, it will be associate vice-president, Equity and Inclusion.

A selection committee that includes representation from across McMaster has been formed and an external executive search firm, Odgers, has been retained to lead the search.

McMaster students, staff, faculty and community partners are invited to share their views on the challenges and opportunities the AVPEI will need to take up by completing this confidential survey, which will help inform the selection committee’s search.

The AVPEI will play a central role in educational and awareness-raising initiatives as well as have a broad mandate to identify and address campus-wide systemic issues. They will be counted on to support the development and implementation of relevant policies and processes to help ensure the values of equity, diversity, and inclusivity are infused into the day-to-day work and life of the university.

An important part of the AVPEI’s duties will be partnering with the Indigenous community at McMaster to embrace and implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Final Report.

As leader of the Equity and Inclusion Office, the AVPEI will also oversee programs and services, such as Human Rights and Dispute Resolution, Inclusion and Anti-Racism Education, the Accessibility Program and Sexual Violence and Prevention Response.
