McMaster celebrates DBAC’s 10th anniversary

McMaster will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the David Braley Athletic Centre this week with a special ceremony on campus Friday.

The 132,000-square-foot athletic centre is one of the largest fitness centres at a Canadian university. The complex includes a double gymnasium, indoor, 200-metre track, four international squash courts, and multipurpose studios for karate, yoga, dance and tai chi.

It is named for Hamilton businessman and friend of McMaster David Braley, whose $5M gift – the second largest donation in Canadian varsity history – helped make the building a reality.

The David Braley Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre, housed within the facility, offers professional services to those both on and off campus. The 6,000-square-foot facility includes an in-ground, salt water hydrotherapy pool, one of the few currently available in the country. It is also home to professionals in a wide range of sport medicine and orthopaedic surgery.

The 10th anniversary of Ron Joyce Stadium will be celebrated during the upcoming football season.

The stadium was made possible thanks to a $10M donation from Ron Joyce, the former police officer who turned Tim Horton’s into an iconic international franchise.

The gift is the largest private donation made to a Canadian university athletics facility.

The reception will also feature a special ceremony honouring the retirement of former Director of Athletics and Recreation and Hall of Fame inductee Thérèse Quigley, and her years of service in Canadian university sport.

Quigley was a standout student-athlete with the Western Mustangs volleyball team. She spent 18 years at McMaster, where she attained a national reputation as a leader in interuniversity sport and recreation programming, fundraising, facility development and student leadership.
