McMaster captures women’s gold and men’s bronze in waterpolo

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/wwpoloaction6.jpg”]The McMaster women's waterpolo team captured the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) gold medal for the third time in four seasons on the weekend in Ottawa with a 3-2 victory over York University.

The match was an intense defensive chess match with the scored tied one each going into the fourth quarter. It was the first time in OUA's 18-year history of the championship game that no one scored a goal in the second and third quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the York Lions scored the go-ahead goal with six minutes remaining on a great shot by Christi Bardecki. The Marauders came to life with their perfect season on the line and
scored twice within a minute of the Lions goal to seal their
championship season. Chris Walton scored the winning goal on perfect feed in the middle to end York's hope of an OUA championship.

McMaster goals were scored by Christine Walton, Katie Hill and Jennifer Doto. York University goals were scored by Jennifer Johnston and Christi Bardecki.

McMaster's goalkeeper, Jen Doto, was named the 2004 Roy Gunell Award Recipient, as the Most Valuable Player of the OUA Women's Waterpolo Championship.

The McMaster women's waterpolo team advanced to the finals with a 7-2
win over the Queens University Golden Gaels in the semi-finals. McMaster was led by Katie Hill with two goals. Five different Marauders scored one goal each in the victory. Holly Tawse scored both of the Golden Gael goals.

The McMaster women's team were undefeated in regular season for the
fourth consecutive year. The teams combined record in OUA competition dating back to the 2001-2002 season is 58-3.

In the bronze medal match the host Carleton Ravens cruised to a 14-4
victory over Queens University.

The McMaster Men's Waterpolo team captured the bronze medal with a
12-10 victory over the Queens Golden Gaels. The Marauders goals were spread out among seven different players. Colin Bullock and David Jones led the “Mac Attack” with three goals each while Queen's Jamie Earle, Ottawa, Ontario scored seven of the Gaels 10 goals in a losing cause.

McMaster was defeated in the semi-finals by the host Carleton
University Ravens in a 11-10 thriller with the lead changing hands seven times before Carleton veteran Raven John Vareka scored his fifth goal of the match with 34 seconds remaining to win the semi-final.

Vareka led the Ravens with five goals, while OUA All-Stars Zolton Csepregi added three and Blake Christie two in the victory. McMaster's Greg Blunsdon scored five goals for the Marauders, with David Jones adding three goals.

The OUA All-Star team was also announced this weekend.

On the women's side, McMaster's Jen Doto (goalie), Katie Hill, and
Chris Walton earned first team selections. Laura Hendrie was named to the second team.

On the men's side, McMaster's David Jones earned a first team
selection. Jon Markle was named to the second team.

Head coach, Quinn Fairley was named OUA Women's and Men's Coach of the Year.
