President Patrick Deane has announced the appointment of Mary Williams as
McMaster's new vice-president, University Advancement. The appointment was
approved at Thursday's Board of Governors meeting following a unanimous vote of
support by the selection committee and approval at the February Senate meeting.

Williams is a McMaster graduate and was named the University's director of Alumni
Advancement in 1994 and, in 1998, became associate vice-president of University
Advancement. “The University has benefited from Mary's strengths as a strategic
leader on many initiatives including, the Changing Tomorrow Today Campaign and The
Campaign for McMaster University,” said Deane. “Each campaign surpassed its targets
and provided the philanthropic support McMaster needed to create new opportunities
for students and advance many areas of research excellence. Mary's knowledge of
alumni, public and government relations and advancement services will build on
McMaster's success in these areas and support the integrated advancement operation
which has served the University so well.”

Williams will begin her new role on May 1. “McMaster is fortunate to have
engaged alumni,
supportive donors and an always expanding reputation as a great place for students
and discovery,” said Williams. “We also have an outstanding team of advancement
professionals who are committed to the University's success and to creating new ways
for the city of Hamilton, the province and the country to benefit from McMaster's
teaching and research.”

Williams is a recognized leader within the educational advancement profession
across
Canada and is currently president of the Canadian Council for the Advancement of
Education. She is an active community member serving as first vice-chair of the Board
for the Hamilton-Burlington-Brantford YMCA.

Deane believes that, “Under Williams' leadership McMaster will continue to benefit
from
an advancement operation that is the envy of many universities and institutions across
Canada.”

McMaster's current vice-president, Roger Trull, is retiring at the end of April after
24
years at McMaster.
