with one of the country's highest civilian honours.
Among the 66 new appointments to the Order of Canada announced by Governor
General David Johnston last week are McMaster alumni Kevin Lynch and Tom Jenkins
and clinical epidemiology and biostatistics professor Gordon Guyatt.
Lynch, who earned his PhD in economics from McMaster, served as clerk of the Privy
Council and was the country's senior civil servant from 2006 to 2009. He now serves as
vice-chair of the BMO Financial Group.
Jenkins earned his degree in engineering in 1982 and is now the executive chairman
and chief strategy officer of Open Text, Canada's largest independent software
manufacturer.
Guyatt, a faculty member and university alumnus, is best known for his work on
evidence-based medicine, a term he coined in 1990 to describe the application of
scientific evidence to clinical decision-making.
All three will be appointed officers of the order and will receive their awards at a
ceremony later this year.
Comedian and actor Eugene Levy and War Child Canada co-founder Samantha Nutt, also
McMaster alumni, were appointed members of the order earlier in 2011.
