Marauders receiver named OUA football rookie of the year

Vandervoort

Touchdown machine Danny Vandervoort had a stellar showing during his first year as a Marauder, including a three-TD performance against the York Lions in week four.

Danny Vandervoort came into his first week of training camp ready to win a starting spot with the Marauders football team.

Twelve weeks later, the native of Barrie, Ont. has been recognized as the 2013 OUA Football Rookie of the Year.

A highly-touted recruit from Bear Creek Secondary School, Vandervoort scored eight touchdowns in eight games, and racked up 31 receptions for 594 yards for an average of more than 19 yards per catch — just one shy of McMaster’s single-season receiving record, and the most ever by a first-year receiver.

The heroics began early for Vandervoort. During the Marauders season opener against The University of Ottawa, he caught six balls including a touchdown pass to help the Marauders secure an opening week victory over the Gee Gees.

Following a strong showing in his second game — a seven-catch, 172-yard performance against Queen’s that included a 73-yard touchdown reception — he was named OUA Offensive Player of the Week. In week four, he scorched the York Lions for five catches, 117 yards and three touchdowns.

Vandervoort continued to shine throughout the OUA conference schedule, and remained among the league leaders in receiving yards.
