Marauders ready for the playoffs

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/ray.jpg” caption=”Marauder kicker Mike Ray”]On another record-setting day for running back Jesse Lumsden, the McMaster Marauders pummelled the Ottawa Gee-Gees 59-1, and clinched a bye in the first round of the OUA playoffs.
Lumsden rushed for 136 yards on 22 carries and scored four touchdowns on the day. In doing so, he eclipsed his own CIS record for touchdowns in a season with 21. He tied Kojo Aidoo's 2,000 record last year with 20.
From the get go, McMaster looked polished and ready for the playoffs,
opening up a 35-0 halftime lead. Adam Archibald had an efficient game at quarterback, completing 14 of 25 passes for 205 yards, two
touchdowns and an interception. Vaughan Swart caught three
balls for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Kicker Mike Ray was the beneficiary of all the McMaster offence,
and after he kicked the extra point on McMaster's third touchdown of the day, he became the OUA all-time career convert leader (Frank Jagas, Western, '90-'94, 143).
The defence looked as strong as it has all season, creating turnovers and getting to the quarterback. Safety Matt Green had 4.5
tackles, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and a touchdown on the day.
Cornerbacks Kesrick Wainwright and Kwame Aidoo had interceptions on the day, and defensive end Jeff Robertshaw had two sacks, giving him 8.5 on the season in only six games.
Ottawa, missing many starters on both sides of the ball, struggled all day as they dropped many passes and fumbled the ball four times. Quarterback Josh Sacobie completed 7 of 19 passes for 130 yards and
two interceptions, however his completion percentage is skewed by at least three or four dropped balls that should have been completions.
Deep threat Ken Branco was blanketed by the Marauder cornerbacks all day and only caught three balls for 38 yards. Joe Barnes was
a force on defence for Ottawa, leading the team with eight tackles and finished second in the OUA in that category.
After a 1-3 end to the season, Ottawa ended up in fourth place in the OUA and hosts a first-round playoff game next week against Guelph. They beat the Gryphons 41-14 earlier this year.
McMaster completed their season 7-1, their first season with a loss since 2000. They finished in second place in the OUA and receive a bye in the OUA quarterfinals. Their next game will be two weeks from now as they host an OUA semi-final game at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
