A wide range of employers, including the City of Hamilton, Sun Life Financial, Toronto Hydro, IKEA and many others, are slated to participate at Wednesday's Connect to Careers job fair.

More than 2,000 students and alumni are expected to connect with 150 employers at Connect to Careers, the first-ever McMaster/Mohawk job fair.

Employers from a wide range of sectors are to participate in the event, Wednesday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hamilton Convention Centre.

“It’s becoming increasingly important for post–secondary institutions to connect students with companies that are hiring,” says Gisela Oliveira, employment services co-ordinator at McMaster’s Student Success Centre. “It also makes sense for colleges and universities to pool resources and work together.”

The range of employers includes Sun Life Financial, Toronto Hydro, IKEA, Costco, PepsiCo Foods Canada, Bermingham Foundation Solutions Limited, the Ministry of Transportation, Gerdau Long Steel North America, the City of Hamilton, Aecon, CIBC, Investors Group, Peel Regional Police and the March of Dimes. Hamilton is home to over half of the companies registered.

“For decades, our company has had a deep and strategic partnership with both McMaster University and Mohawk College,” says Trevor Harris, director of government and public affairs, U. S. Steel Canada. “As a global company, we are constantly seeking out the ‘best of the best’ as we look to enhance our workforce by employing highly-skilled and expertly-trained workers … That’s why we continue to participate in events like this week’s job fair.”

The fair is expected to attract students and alumni from both academic institutions.

In addition to connecting with employers hiring for full-time, part-time, summer and co-op positions, attendees will be able to have their resumes critiqued and get tips from the Dress for Success Fashion Show. Hamilton and Burlington’s Tip Top Tailors, Plato’s Closet and Harmony by Earthwinds, a fair trade shop in Westdale will provide fashions for the show.

Event sponsors include U. S. Steel Canada, ArcelorMittal Dofasco and the City of Hamilton, which is providing free bus transportation every half hour to the Hamilton Convention Centre from both academic institutions.

Registration is available online, and participants are reminded to bring their student or alumni ID to the fair.
