Main Street entrance construction update

Beginning June 6, 2005, through to early August, the construction that is now taking place at the Main Street entrance to McMaster University and McMaster University Medical Centre will expand to affect an extensive area on the campus.

Impact on the University campus

The next stage of work will require the closure of the University's
front access road from the point where vehicles entering from Main
Street West turn left past the parking kiosk. This closure continues
along that access road past building T13 and the Information Technology Building, and up University Avenue to the intersection at College Crescent. The intersection at College and University will remain open.

Access to zone #3 parking will be available from Cootes Drive only.

The area closed to vehicles is also closed to pedestrian traffic.
Temporary sidewalks will be available along Main Street West.
Pedestrian access to campus will be directed around the west side of the ITB or the east side of the hospital.

Impact on bus routes

HSR (city bus) access to the front entrance of the McMaster campus is
impacted and will change as follows on June 5:

Bus routes 1/1A-King and 10-Beeline will continue to access campus via Sterling Street, turn right on University Avenue to Scholars Road, circle around campus to College Crescent and exit on Sterling Street.

Bus stops for these routes will be in effect at Sterling and Forsyth,
Sterling and University Avenue (by the McMaster Museum of Art), and at the Ewart Angus entrance to the Faculty of Health Sciences and McMaster University Medical Centre. Temporary signage will be in place to help direct people from these bus stop locations to the hospital. Interior signage will be in place to direct people from the Ewart Angus entrance to the front of McMaster University Medical Centre.

Bus routes 5A/5C will travel between Cootes Drive, along Scholars Road to Sterling Street.

Updated HSR detour maps are being produced and will be posted on the
project website at http://fhs.mcmaster.ca/mainstreet/ as soon as available.

The campus shuttle bus service will resume its regular route including Scholars Road, College Crescent and accessing west campus.

Impact on hospital access

Throughout this summer-long construction project, the front and
Emergency entrances to McMaster University Medical Centre will remain
accessible for emergency vehicles and private vehicles dropping off and picking up patients. However, as construction continues in July and August, access to the hospitals parking lots from Main Street (from either direction) will be closed to visitors. Instead, visitors will need to enter at the back of the building, off King Street. When this change comes into effect, the detour will be well communicated and clearly signed.
