Saturday to volunteer with non-profit organizations in need of a helping hand.
Dubbed the MacServe Day of Service, the event will see volunteers work with community
agencies in a number of areas, including the environment, health and social issues.
“Not only is it a great way to meet other like-minded people, but it's also an opportunity
to perform some much-needed work in the community,” said Heather Fisher, an
organizer and political science student. “It's just one day, but a lot of valuable work gets
done.”
Meaghan Langille, a third-year student in life sciences, volunteered with Wesley Urban
Ministries as part of last year's event. Her team was responsible for cleaning up a
neighbourhood park and helping serve lunch to agency clients. This year she's helping
to organize a group of off-campus students to participate in MacServe.
“It really opens your eyes to the community you live in,” she said. “I encourage everyone
to get involved and give back to the city.”
HSR and school buses will take participants from campus to sites throughout the city. A
number of agencies in Mississauga are also taking part this year, so that those who
normally commute to Hamilton can take part closer to home.
