Professor Wayne Lewchuk on the remote possibility of the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames being the only two NHL teams operating during a league lockout .

Wayne Lewchuk, professor of labour studies, spoke to The New York Times‘ Jeff Klein about the NHL Players’ Association’s unusual legal maneuvering in Alberta and Quebec.

The association is seeking to stop the league’s board of governors from locking players out in the two provinces – a tactic that was was not tried in 2004-2005, when the entire hockey season was lost due to a labour stoppage.

“I would say the lawyers who thought this up are pretty ingenious. The union is using this to throw sand in the ears of the league,” Lewchuk said.
