If they no longer have a use in your office they might be welcome in another thanks to an auction site developed specifically for the McMaster community.

Hosted by Business Management Services and constructed with the help of Media Production Services, the University Surplus Auction site is now live and will feature its first online auction in early February. It will allow McMaster departments and faculties to post surplus university items to auction and McMaster personnel to bid on them. Sample listings are currently posted.

“This is not only an opportunity for departments and faculties to place items for sale that are no longer required, but for the entire McMaster community to support reusing and recycling,” says Lilian Scime, assistant vice-president Administration. “This site was developed to support the sustainability efforts of the university, and we urge McMaster personnel to register and place useful, functional items up for bid, and for other individuals to browse the site for items that they can put to use.”

Items will be listed by any registered member complete with full descriptions, minimum prices and photographs. The first auction is scheduled to last for two weeks beginning Monday, February 2. Items posted after that date will automatically be entered into the next scheduled auction. Questions during an auction can be directed to the seller by prospective bidders and, if offered by sellers, items can also be viewed prior to bidding.

In keeping with University policy, bids on behalf of a department will be given priority over those bids being made for personal ownership.

BMS Purchasing Resources is offering this site as a free tool for the sale of good quality used items. Users are urged to remember that a successful auction site is dependent on both bidders and sellers subscribing voluntarily to an honour system and dealing fairly. Transactions at the end of auctions will take place directly between sellers and winning bidders. The winning bidder will be responsible for removal arrangements of the item(s) purchased.

All unclaimed items will remain the property of the department/faculty and will either be donated to charity or can be relisted after a ten calendar day grace period.

Anyone with a MAC ID can register. For more information, please go to the test site and click on Terms and Conditions, or contact the auction administrator, Rand MacIvor at macivor@mcmaster.ca.
