Members of the McMaster community are invited to pedal, paddle or car pool to work next week as part of Canadian Environment Week. McMaster, along with several other organizations and groups in the region, is participating in an area and national initiative aimed at challenging people to leave their cars at home during June 5 to June 9.

The Hamilton-Wentworth Commuter Challenge is part of a nation-wide competition between employers, schools, towns, cities and regions of Canada for the distinction of having the highest percentage of commuters who leave their cars at home.

Challenges throughout the week offer prizes for eco-friendly commuters on both the individual, team, local and national levels.

Opening ceremonies for the Hamilton-Wentworth Challenge will be held on June 4. A Big Bike Parade will begin at McMaster and end at City Hall. Local merchants will be on hand to show off the latest on the bike market and you can pick up tips on biking from CAN-BIKE instructors and bike repairs from Recycle Cycles.

On June 7, to celebrate Clean Air Day, Totally Transit Day is a national competition for the most public transit commuters.

On June 8, commuter challenge participants will be encouraged to collect pledges and use their imaginations to discover ecologically sustainable methods to get to work. Telecommute, cycle, walk, in-line skate, ride share or take the bus. Commuters can even canoe, kayak or ride a horse. All proceeds will go to the Lung Association.

McMaster chemistry professor and chair of the Hamilton Air Quality Committee, Brian McCarry, thinks that the week-long event is a wonderful means to highlight the benefits of environmentally friendly transportation.
