John Kelton, Alba DiCenso named to Order of Canada

Two senior health scientists of McMaster University are becoming members of the Order of Canada.

John Kelton is dean and vice-president of health sciences for McMaster and dean of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, as well as a professor of medicine. He is being recognized for his research into blood cell disorders and for his contributions to making Hamilton a hub for health science research.

Alba DiCenso is a professor emerita of McMaster’s School of Nursing and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She is being honoured for her research in evidence-based nursing and for her contributions to the development of nurse practitioners.

Their appointment to Canada’s highest civilian award was announced by Governor General David Johnston on Boxing Day. Members of the Order of Canada are noted for their outstanding contributions at the local or regional level or in a special field of activity.

“This is quite an honour, and I’m very pleased,” said Kelton. “I would like to recognize the role of McMaster University and Hamilton as a magnet for innovation and collaboration which has created and continues to offer wonderful opportunities.

“I know Hamilton’s economy will always be based in its heritage of heavy industry, but it is getting quite a global reputation for its growing health and education sector.”

McMaster President Patrick Deane said: “Dr. Kelton is a polymath with a wide range of accomplishments. He has made significant advances in medical care worldwide and has led the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster through an impressive period of growth, which has raised the profile of the University both nationally and internationally.”

DiCenso said it has been rewarding to see her work reflected in public policy and patient care. “I share this honour with my parents who came from Italy for a better life for their children; my internationally renowned mentors; my talented research colleagues; my fellow nurses committed to applying best evidence to their practice, and to my unfailingly supportive family.”

Carolyn Byrne, associate dean, health sciences and director of the School of Nursing, said: “Throughout her career, Alba DiCenso has provided exemplary leadership. She is known around the world for her promotion of evidence-based nursing, and her ground breaking work on nurse practitioners has led to their full integration in Canada and beyond.  During her career, she has been focused on improving the health care of Canadians.”

Two McMaster alumni also were named to the Order. Peter Calamai BSc`65 is being recognized for his work promoting literacy. Michael Phillips earned his medical degree from McMaster and enters the Order for his contributions to mental health initiatives in China where he lives part of the year.

The Order of Canada was established in 1967 to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation. It recognizes people in all sectors of Canadian society for their varied contributions which have enriched the lives of others and made a difference to the country.

The awards ceremony will be held at Rideau Hall in Ottawa in 2015.
