Third-year Integrated Science students Hannah Dies (left), Sheridan Baker (middle) and Amna Hyder (right) gave oral presentations April 2 as part of the programs annual Synthesis symposium. The conference runs on campus until April 9.

Students in the Integrated Science program are showing off the fruits of their year-long labours this week at their annual research symposium Synthesis.

Third and fourth-year students present their independent projects and theses at the public symposium, which is entirely organized by students. More than 80 high school students will also attend symposium workshops.

The conference runs until April 9.

A number of iSci students made oral presentations Tuesday as part of Synthesis, including three third-year students profiled below:

Hannah Dies (above left) is researching the value of adding an interactive tutorial to first year physics classes. Dies says the use of technology in the classroom may also be valuable in enhancing the learning experience and engaging more students.

Sheridan Baker (above middle) is designing an undergraduate lab using mutant fruit flies. The lab will help students better understand the symptoms and treatment of epilepsy.

Amna Hyder (above right) is studying scientific literacy – something she says is often overlooked in formal education yet essential for any career in science. She is also trying to understand whether students are utilizing the learning resources that they have access to inside as well as outside the classroom.
