From a pool of ten outstanding nominees, John MacGregor, distinguished University professor emeritus of chemical engineering, was honoured with the 2010 McMaster Lifetime Innovator Award, and Joseph Kim, assistant professor of psychology, neuroscience & behaviour, was chosen as the McMaster Innovator of the Year at this year's McMaster Innovator Awards. Spectral Diagnostics Inc. received the McMaster Industry Partner Award.

To acknowledge their achievement, all three were presented with ceramic sculptures.

The McMaster Innovator Awards recognize researchers who contribute to McMaster University's ongoing efforts to build a culture of innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship by creating a product or service to transfer their research discoveries and inventions to society.

For decades, MacGregor has studied multivariate statistics technology at McMaster, garnering many professional accolades. Over the years, industrial partners have sought out his lab for help in solving their thorniest problems, and MacGregor was an early leader in accepting sponsored research. MacGregor founded ProSensus Inc., a high tech company aimed at exploiting the multivariate analysis technology developed in his research group. ProSensus, which has an exclusive license with McMaster, currently employs a dozen full-time engineers and sells services and products to Fortune 500 companies.

Kim's Innovator of the Year Award recognizes his efforts to commercialize his innovative IntroPsych course. This past year Kim successfully executed a commercial agreement which will see IntroPsych sold in higher education markets in Canada beginning in 2012. This online, interactive primary lecture material paired with dynamic, small-group tutorials and live lecture components is delivered to more than 5000 McMaster undergraduate students annually.

Spectral Diagnostics Inc.'s Industry Partner Award recognizes corporations who have made a significant contribution to developing the University's research mandate. The company was recognized for its ongoing research collaboration with Yingfu Li, assistant professor of biochemistry. Spectral has worked with Li to develop aptamer technology for the diagnosis and treatment of sepsis, or blood poisoning.
