Both may be the answer according to this year's McMaster Innovation Showcase keynote speaker.

Aris Melissaratos will discuss the Multi-Path Approach to Commercializing Research that he guides at Johns Hopkins University.

A former secretary of Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development, Melissaratos currently serves as the special adviser for enterprise development to the president of Johns Hopkins University.

Melissaratos oversees Johns Hopkins Technology Transfer, the office that links university researchers and businesses interested in commercializing their inventions. He also has overall responsibility for building Johns Hopkins' relationship with business and forging new connections between the research and corporate communities.

Melissaratos served as secretary of Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development for four years and was widely viewed as highly effective in marketing Maryland as a location for businesses ranging from life science and technology corporations to manufacturing and retail.

Melissaratos spent most of his career with Westinghouse Electronics in Baltimore, eventually becoming vice-president of science and technology and chief technology officer at corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh. Before joining Maryland's government in 2003, he also served as vice-president of Thermo Electron Corp. and founded Armel Private Equity Investments.

“We're fortunate to have Mr. Melissaratos at our first Innovation Showcase to share his advice and knowledge on best practices for successful commercialization,” said Mo Elbestawi, McMaster's vice-president, research and international affairs.

“His combined, hands-on experience in the industry, government and university sectors has given him incredible insight into the most practical and effective ways to commercialize research for economic development purposes.”
