Parlar is an internationally well-known scholar in the fields of inventory control, supply chain management and game-theoretical applications in management science. He uses mathematical models and scientific techniques to help businesses make decisions and manage uncertainty.
“One of DeGroote's strengths is the outstanding academic research that is conducted by faculty at the School. Our goal as a community is to recognize, encourage and increase awareness of our colleague's research activities,” said associate dean, academic, Milena Head.
The Faculty Research Award is presented to a member of the DeGroote faculty who consistently demonstrates excellence in research endeavours. In making its decision, the Faculty Research Committee considers individual achievements in research, both in terms of publications and industry impact.
“For this inaugural award, the Faculty Research Committee placed particular focus on academic contributions. Dr. Parlar has made many important contributions to the field of management science, McMaster University and the DeGroote School of Business, and I am very pleased to present this award to him,” said Head.
Since 1980, Parlar has published more than 80 papers in highly-ranked international journals and he has also made nearly 90 presentations in academic conferences. He has received many grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). In a study conducted by the University of Alberta's School of Business, it was reported that the citations received by Parlar's publications between 1990 and 1999 placed him in the top 1 per cent among all Canadian business academics.
