More than 3,500 people have counted themselves in.

A total of 3,501 members of the McMaster community took part in the Inclusive Community Survey sponsored by the President's Advisory Committee on Building an Inclusive Community and the Office of Human Rights and Equity Services in March.

2,324 students took part as did 819 staff members and 358 members of faculty.

The survey, part of a two-year Inclusive Community Project aimed at helping McMaster to meet its Refining Directions goal of building an inclusive community with a shared purpose, was offered both on-line or in paper versions for those people who did not have ready access to a computer or to the web.

Participants' confidential responses are being compiled and analyzed by Ibis Consulting Group, an independent firm which specializes in inclusion, diversity and change-management work. At the end of May, Ibis will present a first draft of a report on the results of the survey to the broad-based McMaster Inclusion Steering Committee. From there, the information gathered through the survey and through a series of meetings and focus groups held earlier in the year will be used to plan the steps the University will take over the coming years to address barriers and to build an even more inclusive community.

Participants in the inclusive community survey were eligible to enter a draw to win one of 18 great prizes. Human Rights Office staff drew the names of the winners of those prizes on April 14 and the winners have already been notified of their good fortune.

The winners of the major prizes in the draw were:

  • Gift Baskets and Bags (courtesy, in part, of the Ontario Public Interest Research Group): Diana Parker, Mansi Shah, Marla Moore, Paola Borin, Connie Thibideau.
  • Pulse Membership (courtesy of Athletics and Recreation): Caitlyn Hicks
  • Gift Certificates to Campus Services: Desmond Yao, Sharlene Cipolla, Helen Ayre, Tarek Al Ajak, Amy Pudgjunas, Ben Whyte, Anas Masood, Linda Michtis, Jane Turner-Cooke, Lalit Hedge.
  • iPod Nano: Alim Nagji, Deb Garland.

A number of people also won smaller prizes (courtesy in part of OPIRG, the McMaster Students Union and Quarters) at the Survey Launch celebration held in the MUSC Marketplace on March 21, 2006.

Organizers wish to extend their thanks to the organizations that contributed prizes, the volunteers who helped to bring the survey to life and the 3,501 members of the McMaster community who took the time to complete and submit the survey.
